![]() GuardiansA Poem by Shayla Sayer![]() I generally write about darkness.... Time to write about hope.![]() Guardians Tiny hands wave And clasp my finger tight Smiling, I’ve begun to realize Why women are so vulnerable to hurt. Our hearts are always laid open for the world To hurt, to gawk at, to protect. We feel each word like a physical blow Cringing at sentence structure. But looking at this small creature Harmless, helpless It occurs to me that my heart extends to it Feeling its pain like my own. We hurt so strongly, from the smallest things And it makes us able to feel the pain Of the helpless we are asked to nurture Of the harmless we are asked to guide. If women were calloused Unable to feel as deep as we are This child laying here, smiling Wouldn’t last very long, for the world is harsh. The world that humans have crafted Is a world where only the strong will thrive And those who stand in the way of the powerful Are crushed beneath the heels of angry clowns. We are all that stands in the way of the crashing tide That swells and threatens to sweep the future out Before it even has a chance to mature And become something worth looking forward to. Children are this future The present despises And if children are the future Then women are the guardians of time. By: Shayla Sayer © 2012 Shayla SayerReviews
