We Are Highway Nights, Part II

We Are Highway Nights, Part II

A Poem by Shutter Speed

We left the Highway of Gravel

behind, heading due west to escape

Phaeton’s destruction as long as we could.

We were the gravitational center of this two-dimensional night.

My Desperado,

I left him on the ledge of the Highway.

Told him I’d be back.

But she slid her hand into mine so softly that

at first I didn’t realize it.

She told me, she said

that West never ended.

We can walk West as long as we want and we’ll never

hit East.

She told me, she said

that Copernicus was wrong

all those years ago. The world is flat, and

it never ends. Not East and West it doesn’t.

And thinking back, I never did see a horizon.
