I am Woman

I am Woman

A Poem by everything inbetween

I am White

I am African

I am Oriental

I am every race there is

I am peaceful

I am headstrong

I love

I fight

I am human

But most of all,

I am equal

My blood runs through the same veins as yours

My heart beats the same as yours

My hair grows the same way,

And eventually some day I will die just like you

The difference between us?

I led the French army to success

I forced the Anglo-Burgundians retreat

Across the Loire River

That was in 1412

I saved the life of Captain John Smith

When he first came to my country

I helped establish peace between my people

And the new settlers

I may be part of the reason that you call your city home today

I wrote “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”

I helped bring attention to slavery

I helped save my people

I was an English nurse

And I helped modern day nurses

I helped establish medical training facilities after the war

I was a world famous chemist

I helped discover new elements

I also won a Nobel Prize for my work

For my discoveries

I refused to give up my seat

I refused to move to the back of the bus

I refused to give up my rights to a white man

I could’ve lived during the Holocaust

I was more than capable of surviving

But I refused to let go of my children

I refused to let my infant be taken away

So I was burned

And I was gassed

Because I loved

Who am I?

I am woman

I am mothers

I am sisters

I am aunts

I spent years fighting for my rights

I spent years fighting for the right to be considered your equal

I spent years proving I was human

That we are the same

And what do I get for my fighting?

For all the suffering I did in silence?

I get shot

I get killed

I get punished because of some men’s feelings of entitlement

I get told “not all men”

But yet

You see no men standing up

Nowadays I am taking self defense classes

But where are the “rape is wrong” classes?

Where are the

“No means no, under the influence of drugs or not” classes?

Why do women have to protect themselves

Because some men do not know how to exercise self-control?

I am Woman

And I wouldn’t ask to be different if I had to (Copyright: Ash Marie)

I love all your reference in here! Women significantly contributed in the world's state of affair despite their perceived physical weakness. Unfortunately, to date, there are some part of society where we are being treated like a second class citizens. Very powerful write!
