Spirit Ascension

Spirit Ascension

A Poem by Justin Tobey
"

I wrote this poem to show an idea that I had. I think that maybe environments and situations make things look or act evil, and that, in the right place, all things have the potential to be good.

"

In the well, the darkness moved.

The shadowy twilight

Shifted and spun

On a windless breeze.

They pulsed and filled all

With their presence.

The shades grew bolder,

Fighting and clawing up

To the living world above.

Tendrils of nothingness

Raked the starry skies,

Plotting their rise.

With a silent shriek,

The shadows sounded

Their dark victory cry,

Striking a maddening fear

Into the hearts

Of all that heard.

However, the pure light

Of the silver moon

Burned their very essence.

They screeched in pain

And fell back to the pit.

Always, they try to escape.

This poem is so descriptive and beautiful. The words flow from it with ease. The short and sharp sentences provide a sudden flow to the poem, making the reader examine the face value perspective. A second read forces thought upon the reader. This is the wonder of this poem; its multitude of meanings.

Some argue that poems are too complex for people to understand. It's the reason some people find little pleasure in poetry. In this poem, the meanings are neither complex nor confusing. The meanings are precise and clear.

Language choice is just perfect. Each word has been chosen with perfection in mind. It is such an active poem; there is so much going on. That's what I love about it. The verbs just demand attention.

'Tendrils of nothingness' - That's what I call beauty. It is words like these that capture people's imaginations. I love it! Tendrils is a difficult word to use in poetry, especially in poems which are intended to have a positive meaning. When used in combination with 'of nothingness', it seems to negate the darkness and offers a neutral perspective.

'The shadows sounded
Their dark victory cry'

I just wanted to note that those lines seem to scream out to me. Well done. Good job.

Thanks for the review!
