Nightmare

Nightmare

A Poem by Justin Tobey
"

I had a nightmare last night.

"

Sheets and blankets are sprawled

in a twisting cocoon around me,

as my thoughts drift through dark realms

of chaos, shadow, and depression.

My fevered mind takes me across

the stormy seas of my shaking imagination.

Black creatures of unknowable power

await in the dark for their chance.

Shifting wraiths and skeletal figures

are all that are left of my once-good friends.

They surround me, lashing out occasionally,

all the while tightening their circle

of dark magick and unstoppable despair.

As I find myself lost in the dream once again,

I float through an infinity as deep as time.

Finally, a diamond beacon of light shines,

cutting through the maelstrom of shadow.

All of the power the dark held over me

is swept away by the golden, rising sun

and the dazzling rays of sunrise to the East.

As always, feel free to critique. Also, it's not supposed to rhyme. It's free form. I'm only adding this because it looks like it should. It doesn't. :)

Again I love it, and I don't think that it would or should ever rhyme. I love the first stanza and the imagery it holds. I can actually picture this.
