Finding Me

Finding Me

A Poem by Justin Tobey
"

Finding myself...

"

How can I find that sacred balance

between striving to change and grow

and the peaceful state of finding me?

If I constantly reach for more knowledge

and the wisdom to rightly use it,

how can I be any one thing long enough

to find peace with being it?

And what does it mean, really?

Undefined as I am, will I always feel this?

This uncertainty of what I am

and envy at what others have become?

My passions, hopes, and unleashed dreams

pull me to a thousand places at once.

With no definite path to follow,

can I ever say with certainty,

"This is me?"

What is "finding yourself" anyway?

Does it mean having a title, a word

that displays who and what you are?

Or is it a deeper, more complex quality?

Although I can outwardly project it,

is inner confidence what is needed

to find my true strength and soul?

As always, feel free to critique. Also, you may think this poem is the same as "Who I Am," but there are some differences to me. Who I Am was more about how others see me, where this one is looking inward towards myself.

Such a complex question, and one we all want an answer to. Who am I? Really? We change as time moves forward. Experiences change us... teach us .... whether good or bad, they teach us. We are ever changing, ever growing creatures. The bigger complexity is spirit vs. flesh.. because spirit is who we truly are and flesh is merely a place to call home. I think once we accept change, we are on the path to self awareness. I don't know that we ever really "find" ourselves, I think we become aware of ourselves.

Ah, not easy to respond to in a review. Too many layers. Too many....

Great write Justin! You've given my mind a little something to play with tonight when the insomnia kicks in... lol

Seriously, lovely work! :) As always...

Nice job! I kind of wrote about the same thing in a poem called, "Their Unintended Consequences". You should check it out, you might like it.

Keep up the good work!

It brings forth a deeper thought.

it asks more question, what are we really looking for when we are trying to find ourselves?

through this poem springs forth new knowledge, the positive with the negative converges and creates an offspring, the resultant eurekas.

A wonderful piece.

Looking inward is important. What others see--well, that's so little of who we are. And then there's the person we try to be, to bend the perceptions of the people we know. And then there is the inward me, the one we can't change, shouldn't change and need to find.

I'm on a journey to find mine, too.
