Words Suck

A word…How did this pairing of letters come to be? In what language was a virgin word spoken for the first time?

A word…The “simple task” of enunciating a feeling that travels from the depths of your consciousness to arrive in a hurried state at your vocal cords, ready to spring into action…

A word…Can elicit a reaction ranging from horror to exhilaration…

A word…Can have unintended consequences that may spiral into the unknown…maybe a genocide…maybe detention in high school…maybe a threesome…

A word…Once it is spoken, it can never be taken back…it will take on many forms once released…a looming presence in someone’s brain…a headline in the New York Times…or it can float in the ether for eternity…there is no such thing as “striking it from the record”…

A seed…This can be planted deep within the chasms of our mind…in a dark, unknown corner…a spoken word, maybe said in jest, can encapsulate the tiny seedling…neurotransmitters act as water, fuel for growth…repetitive thoughts take on responsibilities of the sun, warming and gestating…a needless afterthought spewing out of an egocentric narcissist, can grow into a full-fledged oak tree of despair, pain, and depression…difficult it will be to uproot the tree once the roots have grown deep.

What are words really? What purpose do they serve? Basic communication needed to navigate within our societal norms? Yes. However, when complex thoughts, feelings, and emotional states burst onto the scene unwelcomed, words become a 3 year old attempting to theorize about the physics of a black hole.

What sadistic comedian came up with the word “happy”? What is defined as “happy” for the aforementioned scourge was a subconscious flooding of random life experiences and emotions that elicited a certain feeling, in which case it was labeled “happy”. However, happy is different for every soul walking this earth…Happy can be a child getting the gift of rice while struggling in an impoverished country…Or happy can be a spoiled American teenager that just watched Housewives of New Jersey…

When someone is attempting to verbalize something of deep importance, whether it be an oncoming storm of grief or to profess undying love to your soul mate, the true essence, the unadulterated feelings, will be trapped in a prison, unable to be let out…Mere postcards sent from your 4x4 cell will become your envoy in place of the outpouring of your heart and soul.

Basically, you are left to your own devices. The onus is on each and every one of us to formulate and verbalize the ebb and flow of our inner sanctum.

Good luck to all. You are going to need it.

An ingenious description of the power of words. I've often wondered who decided what words really were. Not as in depth as your poem desccripts, but for isntace why is purple called purple or lasanga or fettachini, or vagina...you know weird things like that...i'm weird. Any who this was very well expressed. The meaning of this piece is something to be remembered. There was a message here and I feel it was laid out quite clearly and to the point. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you very uch for the review! I also wonder how words end up being associated with objects!!
I stumbled upon this page Steve literally normally run away a mile from prose as well as prose running away fro me. I just can't seem to do extacly what you seggest in this a very honest writing. So I found it ironic. On th subject of the word I always thought that the wirters f the gospel of John where very wise in the sense of suggesting a nw beggining so after the word is verbalized wouldn't the correct meaning be adhered to that word?

Great stuff though

Happy to have stumbled upon

Thank you very much, Rene!
I had someone leave a nasty review the other day to one of my works and I told them that words are powerful and should be used with caution... they said, "words are just words".... I could not disagree more... they are sooo much more than that... they can evoke emotion, give hope where none resided, they can soothe a weary soul, easy a troubled mind, warm a lonely heart.... they can "make or break" the psyche.... you have expressed that well here.. I love the ending... so true... nice job..
