A Poem by S. K. Burke

They should start living for the sake of living

Not to get a picture of themselves living

Or to post an account of how they’re living

Or even for someone to look at them and say, “wow, they’re living!”

They need to start living for the sake of living

Someone needs to tell them that their blurry pictures

Of exaggerated laughter and holding hands

Are not memories

And their unprecedented hugs and kisses

And hair holding and bad advice

Are not friendships

And the meaningless quotes

And chopping strings of prose

Are not expressions of wisdom and depth

they need to live for the sake of living  because anything else is shallow

and life is not shallow

life has peaks and valleys and oceans and beautiful,

glorious, experiences that can’t be seen through the lens of a camera

or described on a virtual forum.

Feel it! Taste it, see it, BE it.

There, I’m telling you.

I told my children. Travel, test life and have fun. Life is too short to hold on to the past. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.
