Have a Nice Day

Have a Nice Day

A Poem by Anni Pon
"

Based on a true story.

"
Sometime after the Have-a-nice-day,
After the swish
   of a smarter doorway,
After the shuffle
   of bags, like cards,
After the honks
   of impatient cars,
After the sidewalks
   evolve into road,
After the turns
   shake up my load,
After the front door
   is unlocked at home,
I realize.

She shortchanged me.

Its like a juggling
act getting
groceries unloading
to the counter to
the cart to the car
then hone unloading
putting away omg
who wouldn't go
insane multitasking
and then forgetting
or losing m y cell phone
but I always been lucky
enough someone found
it and turned it in
and now you have
to do it all beneath
a mask ..lol what fun
huh?..

I had that happen to me too. I called the store and told the manager.

I also recall getting halfway home from the supermarket and realizing I forgot my calculator in the shopping carriage after unloading the bags. I went back but it was gone.
I felt terrible for days. Life goes on though.

Behold the lot of the modern shopper. Why is it always after you get home that you realize what has happened?

Oh I have had this happen, but one of the worst events this reminded me of was when
I got home late on a Thursday night from Kroger, and realized I didn't have my checkbook.
I had left it outside in the parking lot on a cart.
I never drove so fast on our little country road to get back there.
And sure enough, there it was...still on the cart...what luck.
I was both relieved and beating myself up...breathing a sigh of relief and laughing at the same time.
I like the irony of the speaker battling the traffic to finally get home, relieved to be there, and then
after all that, finding out the cashier had been short on the change...but that her mood was aptly changed.

Very well chosen words. They aren't many but they nonetheless created a vivid image in my head for an otherwise dull, everyday atmosphere.

I like the style of this poem and the humour. The style makes the ending a surprise and I identify with the frustration, but find it funny too
