Who Are You

Who Are You

A Poem by Laura Sparkle

What do my eyes show me now, in the dead of night?

I try to deny what I’m looking at but I can see you now,

Your hair in your eyes and your skin burned and blazed

But I cannot see your eyes; they look like black holes…

And you smile at me, you vile impossible monster,

I try to remember that I can look away any time,

What are you sitting on? Is it darkness?

Is it the moment I thought I have found myself?

Why are you naked, your chest exposed,

Your bottoms are covered in shadowy doubt…

What does my mind tell me right now?

Is it your voice I hear or is it someone else’s?

I sent my best angels to look after him,

And I will be damned if I let you lay one finger of sin

On his perfect body and porcelain skin.

What are you and who? How does this work out?

I went into his mind and look what I found,

Is this my dream or is this his exact one…

What are you, monster, what have we done?

Why is my soul dimming, what have I lost,

Are you part of his future or are you the past?

Why are my eyes crying, what have I said,

Are you his nightmare, or is he dead?

Why is my heart pounding, what do you know,

Are you the reason him and I can’t let go?

Nightmarish but beautiful at the same time. Nice images and well described.

Sounds like a dark nightmare of your biggest fear being exposed... you set the mood with perfect imagery.

Deeply moving and beautifully dark... Expresses a tone of both strength and fear, questions of love and life... Brilliant.
