amour eternel

amour eternel

A Poem by Alice Luanne Sutcliffe

we sat on the carpet playing trivial pursuit
cheating when the other went to the bathroom
and then pausing for a dramatic effect
so it didn't seem like we knew all the answers.

the christmas tree by the fireplace was
                      garnished with tinsel and candycanes
but there were no presents or cards underneath
because all we wanted was each other.

on the fourteenth day of the second month
you stood on my porch with a bouqet of lilies
and bottles of jaeger stuffed into paper bags
with a lopsided smile and not a single excuse.

every time it rained you sprawled on my bed
and when i asked you why the clouds cried
you took my hand and told me it was because
                      heaven had lost another angel.

you made me a cake with purple frosting
even though it's the color i hate the most
and when i asked you why, you kissed me
and said you'll just have to eat me instead.

you gave me a box with cardinal ribbons
and one-thousand squares of every-color paper
and told me to write down all of my wishes
and to do it quickly because you didn't
have an eternity to make them come true.

Author's Note

Alice Luanne Sutcliffe
i said it didn't matter if you finished or not
because our love would last an eternity
and that was the only wish i'd told the stars about.
