Merely Human

Merely Human

A Poem by Subhadeep Banerjee

Why does the cheer of millions
Echo through the sky
When India wins a match?
How can they all be one?
...They are merely human.

Why did the innocent endure exile
And waste the best years of his life
Just for his friend?
How could he sacrifice so much?
...He was merely human.

Why did the clown keep smiling on stage
And never flinch for a moment
Though his son was dying at home?
How could he hide his tears?
...He was merely human.

How could the man avenge his wife's death
By killing the one responsible
Even when he was about to die himself?
Where did he find the strength?
...He was merely human.

Why did the old couple travel a thousand miles
To a land they never knew
Just to see his son's dead body?
How did they find the way?
...They were merely human.

Why did she walk up
Without a single tear
And embrace her dead love?
Why couldn't she cry?
...She was merely human.

How can God be greater
If He cant feel these gems of Human feelings?
How can he know man's passion
If He cant die defending His love?
How would He feel pain
If He can follow His will?
How can He value life
If He is immortal?
How can He be counted upon
If He doesn't need to trust?

We live, we die
We love, we cry
We are greater than any God-
We are merely Human!
