The Mask

The Mask

A Poem by Sue
"

I dedicate this one to all those who struggle with being themselves and who long to drop that 'mask' that has imprisoned them....

"

I watched as you fixed your expression

With the smile that didn’t quite meet your eyes

The mask that protectively hid you

Concealing you with its disguise

A mask for each different occasion

So that no one was truly aware

That inside you were secretly dying

With hurt you weren’t willing to share

Then I watched as Jesus oh so gently

Took the mask that imprisoned you away

Leaving you free but still trembling

As you basked in the warm light of day

And I saw as you blossomed so sweetly

As He tended you with His deep love

And you stood with your eyes really shining

As you talked of the change from above

And somewhere a mask it lies broken

Shattered in pieces like sand

No longer of use to its owner

Free at last from the grip of its hand
