Happily Never After...

“Don’t peek!” I exclaimed as he stood there bewildered. I quickly placed a package in his hand as he waited patiently. “Now open!” He promptly opened his eyes and started tearing open the package. When he opened the box he found a small bracelet with a single shell. “No way,” he laughed out, “You remembered!” “Well of course I did! You talk about it all the time,” “No I don’t!” he countered still laughing a little. After some time he stopped with a mild regret in his smile, “I wish I could go to the beach once before this Saturday.” I smiled and put a hand around him, “Don’t worry we’ll go as soon as you’re back.” He looked at me a little worried, “You promised you won’t-” “I know what I said. It did not take long before Saturday was here. I was sitting outside in the waiting room shaking my legs unconsciously. That’s when the doctor came out and shook his head. His parents broke down. I stood there silently. I knew this was coming, but was no less of a shock. I let my myself in the Operation Theatre. He lay motionless. He looked as beautiful as the first time I had seen him. I sat next to him and held his now cold hands. “I won’t cry.” I told him with a steady voice. “I’ll see you soon…” I lay my head on his unbeating heart not shedding a single tear. As promised.
