A Shell-Shocked Plea

A Shell-Shocked Plea

A Poem by Siren

Just like that,
softly stealing away,
into the night that is quiet and dark.

I am paralyzed at high speed,
Chasing after it
Calling out for it
And watching it go.

I wonder if this is the way it's to be
or if it will gently return in the night,
new skin for me to wake in
next morning.

I scream and I am silent,
sobbing and in shock--
Lost and wounded,
more bewildered than before,
sliding and sinking deep into the grave
I thought I'd left behind...

they whisper softly to me,
pleading to feel their appetite.
they have slept long enough,
and call like curious toddlers,
hoping for the blood that gives them life so well

and what can I do to resist?
they have carried me through,
they own me,
they
NO
and I search instead
Fighting, sprinting, gasping--
where are you?!
knees, in wet soil;
tears, flowing in rivers;
breath, choked out bit by bit;

---a broken whisper to the night sky

(...don't let me forget...)
