Escape

Escape

A Poem by Annabel Lee

My heart pounds

Like a timpani,

In my chest.

The sky opens up

as night begins to fall.

When it encompasses everything,

The world receeds back into its homes,

Exausted from the day.

Looking up,

At the ubiquitous sky,

stretching as far as the bare skeletal trees on the horizon.

They reach up,

Bony arms extending,

For each entrancing star,

Buried within the purple-black mysterious sky.

Below me,

The grass speeds up,

Rushing like emotion,

A green sea.

The sky and the grass,

separated by the strong guardians of the trees,

Seem to meld together,

as I go faster and faster.

I stop,

Drop to my knees,

Breathe in the juicy, cold, sweet night air,

Just sitting there,

Simply me,

The night,

The trees,

The grass.

This is my escape.
