All Hallow's Eve

All Hallow's Eve

A Poem by Susanna F

From the place beyond description -

The Otherworld below and above and around you,

Where I was more than a phantom

Of a life once rich with physicality,

I emerge slowly, a mist.

The annual memory of senses

Takes my essence by surprise and rushes

Upon me in the silvered light

Of a gravid satellite, la Luna

As she stares, a single eye upon the rade.

Crowding around me, unfathomable

To those who dwell in matter dense

Are my brothers and sisters

The ghosts and gods - the Fae and demons

An incorporeal host in revelry.

The chill wind rattles vivid leaves

Upon the drowsy darkened greenery;

A pellucid night in tattered cloud raiment

Is ideal for this time of our abandon

When all requests for bounty must be honored.

For just one night, we dance unfettered

In the world that God and saints deny us commonly.

I watch you - what once I was

Before the transformation took

What is called "life" and gave another reality.

I see the children in their masks and paint

Each a different mind and soul

One day to join us, but for now they grow

Their actuality is this night of celebration

Of remembering the gifts of life and death.

Dear Susanna,

Ah, Samhain, I see you know it, the cross-quarter holiday between the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice. Most do not know this. Literally, the end of summer. All hallows eve (Hallowmass with the Christians). Day of the Dead. The opposing holiday of Beltane Day. The "Feast of Tara". Entry into the Dark.

Very nice poem with a powerful feel of the old times. Excuse me from plugging one of my poems, but this has the feel of

"For I have danced with antlered spirits
In fevered dance in pale moonlight
And I have supped with ram-head serpents
In moldy fens on drug-numbed nights"

from my poem "Once We Were Giants".

You are a rare individual. An excellent poet. Versed in ancient lore. And a participant in today's life, seeing the old live in the new and being able to comment in a knowledgeable manner.

Kudos, Dear Lady. I liked this!

Best regards,

Rick

The day is fast approaching, and it's a brilliant write on the edge of the eve... Here you've created a history.. one come back to share the stage with the living another time.. if only for moments.. Very deeply moving...

Came upon this from your writing contest and I had to tell you how much I loved it. It has such a magickal feel to it.

Okay. Creepy. That just gave me goosebumps, but that's the whole purpose of Halloween! It makes you scared! Love this poem to pieces! Especially that second-to-last stanza. That's my favorite! AWESOME JOB!!! (p. S. happy halloween!)
