American Girl

American Girl

A Poem by Amy Beth Storey

She's got long brown hair, and eyes to match
Fair skin, freckles, maybe she's not perfect.
Sometimes her acne gets real bad,
Sometimes she feels like she wants to stay in bed.

She loves Saturday cartoons, double-scoop ice cream cones,
And swinging on the swings and her local park.
Her bedroom is painted in purple hues,
Echoing her life and her favorite tunes.

Tell me she's not the American girl
Tell me she's not the average person
Tell me she's not beautiful the way she is,
Oh tell me she's not just an American girl

She's got secrets and dreams that are all her own,
And she still gets scared when she's at home alone.
She loves to hang out at the coffee shop,
Its on the corner, its run down, but its her daily stop.

She loves the color yellow, and summer dresses
Fresh cut grass and rain are her favorite smells.
And for all she's done, its never good enough.
She's still waiting for someone to love.

Tell me she's not the American girl
Tell me she's not the average person
Tell me she's not beautiful the way she is,
Oh tell me she's not just an American girl

Her favorite show will always be Full House,
And she relates to the crazy life.
She goes to school and lives her days,
She's got plans and she's going her own ways.

Her job is at the small movie theatre,
She sells candy to little boys.
And all she knows is what she's seen,
And she's so blessed to know where she's been.

Tell me she's not the American girl,
Tell me she's not the average person
Tell me she's not beautiful the way she is,
Oh tell me she's not just an American girl

In the suburbs of the city, where all the houses look the same.
In the classrooms of the public school, where all the kids never know her name.
In the country where freedom stands, all your dreams are at your hand.
You never know just what you've got, American girl right from the start

Tell me she's not the American girl
Tell me she's not the average person
Tell me she's not beautiful the way she is,
Oh tell me she's not just an American girl

An American girl, an American girl,
Brown hair, brown eyes
American girl
Bad dreams, fears still
American girl
American girl

She's just the American girl
