What Will My Happiness Look Like?

What Will My Happiness Look Like?

A Poem by Tessa Melendez

Some days,
I must wonder what Life's idea of happiness could have in store for me.
Is it just me,
training and writing?
Or will there be more?

Perhaps, it will include a dog.
Someone cute and cheerful to welcome me home,
Cuddle against my side so I won't feel alone,
Drive away my darkness with the softest caress

Or maybe Life and Love will finally join forces?
Come together in an honorable harmony of happiness,
Grasping each other in fevered folds,
igniting like the yin and yang of torches.

Perhaps...
the two will bless me with a calm to my chaos?
A rainbow to accompany my storm,
Create a new norm,
Warm winds welcoming wonders of my rains,
Soothing my thunder with just the right word

Perhaps, my future will involve a human companion,

Someone to warm my heart and soul without being told,

Maybe they'll just know,
They'll read me like their favorite book,
A new kind of warmth in their look,
Stay for more than weeks or days,
See that my heart won't be a thing for play,
And well flow together the way turtles do on currents of water,

Though my previous experiences tell me the latter is unlikely,
I merely hope for some form of companion.
For what are humans if not lonesome creatures?
What are humans if not bottomless pits, starving for attention to fill the rift?

Author's Note

Tessa Melendez
This piece was written because I felt okay for once, despite the depression. I wanted to take advantage of it and write something peaceful, if not just a little bit more on the bright side. I'm in a writer's chat now on Instagram and the people there are inspiring me to at least attempt to write something as often as possible. Not always wait for something strong to come. Sometimes good things come softly and peacefully.
