Trust Is A Cobra

Trust Is A Cobra

A Poem by Tessa Melendez

For those of you who
don't get why I say I have trust issues,
Allow me to simplify it for you.

See,
Nobody stays.
Many say it's a common phase.
But that's something I find hard to believe,
Even my closest friends lose interest in me,
Then they disappear and replace me.

I'd ask "what's the deal?",
But, what's the point?
They're supposed to move on,
Figure out where they belong.
So, I'll just keep my mouth shut.

But the thing that poisons me,
Is the notion that...
No matter how good I am in a relationship,
I get tossed aside like trash.

Like they're cobras and I'm a mouse,
Just trying to build a house
when I'm struck with venom.
Left questioning why I wasn't eaten.
Questioning becoming an overpowering venom
Until my ability to love...
My overflowing affection...
Is dissolved.

Now, I no longer want a house.
I'm no longer really a mouse.
I'm something new.
Maybe just a corpse.
Nonetheless, I lack trust,
That part of my mind has begun to rust.

Trust is a cobra.
A monster we all must face,
Determined to tame,
Or die maimed.

I really like the twist you put on this--comparing the concept of trust to a deadly animal. It's often difficult to gain trust around many, especially new people you meet along the way. You don't have to trust everyone, but just allow yourself to let in a couple who are close enough to you...they'll help you build the house and defend it until the day they die.
