The Right Response

The Right Response

A Poem by A. J. Kingsley
"

I wrote this on a particularly stressful day of school. People would ask how I was and when I was honest about how I was feeling I was reprimanded, or told others had it worse. This was the result.

"
"How are you?"
My heart aches, my eyes sting, I can barely stay awake
because the thought of standing is exhausting.
"How are you?"
My soul is tired from constantly pouring into others,
it breaks me that I keep getting pushed
to be more than I can handle,
and it gets worse when I push myself.
"How are you?"
I'm so broken... why can't anyone see
how weak I am?
"How are you?"
... Help me...
"How are you?"
...
...
...
"I'm doing OK."
