Mother's Day

Mother's Day

A Poem by Raven: The Thought Hole
"

A poem I wrote for Mother's Day. By the time I put my pen to the page, it was nearly one in the morning. I had no idea what was flowing from my hand, but something good came of it :).

"

The tree shades,

Seeking no thanks.

In your eye,

There are no ranks.

Love is a gift, not a barter,

A mother gives to every son and daughter.

One day, one card, a five dollar bill,

Such a small space and a big heart to fill,

I guess I'll say what I can,

For time is falling in each grain of sand.

Only a mother would carry you home,

When all others have left you alone,

Only a mother could sit still,

And listen to the day's emptiness and fill.

Doctor, Professor, these titles will fail,

When there is the sound of a baby's wail.

Mom is the only name,

Who gives love; no blame or shame,

Mom, the roots of an ever growing tree,

The higher it stretches, the more it sees.

Seeing life in a different way,

Grasping the depth of every day,

True love, a selfless act,

So much care in a heart so compact.

One day, one time, to say it all,

One out of winter, spring, summer and fall.

Happy day to the only one,

Who has risen always with the sun.

Happy Mother's Day mom,

Sorry it took so long,

To notice all the love, the care,

As obvious as the clothes you wear.

The mother lives

The hardest life,

Always gives,

And settles strife.

This poem must have delighted your mother.

I can't write poetry, and I am 59, so naturally I marvel that you can do such good work at such a young age.

You can discuss the technical aspects of writing poetry with your fellow poets. I will mention some aspects of the content.

You state the poem is a personal Mother's Day gift from you to your own mother, yet it lacks personal details that are unique to you and your mother. In it's current form, the poem could apply to any mother. It is so general in nature, it could be printed on the front of a Hallmark card, and be mailed to anyone.

I would have liked to have seen both dramatic and trivial scenes from your life with your Mother that would have demonstrated your Mother's love.

But don't take this as severe criticism. I like the poem very much, and I congratulate you on a job well done.
