Self-Pity

Self-Pity

A Poem by timcampbell

do you pity me?
i can tell what you think
when you’re asleep
your head’s in the clouds
your head to the side
your eyes are still open
but you don’t face me

do you pity me?
at the end of the day
when we don’t speak
your fork hits the plate
you’re done for the night
you get up to leave
you’re done with me

do you pity me?
you loved me once before
when i was yours
that scent isn’t yours
as you walk through the door
i know it’s not me that
you dream of anymore

did you pity me?
when our lips locked
and that scent wasn’t mine
and i got up to meet him
and i stopped dreaming of you?

when i left the room, i didn’t
i didn’t pity you
do you pity me?
