        Listen

 their talking to you,

calling out in voices

to tiny to hear

 

       Listen

their calls are frantic,

their small voices

high and keening

 

       Listen

as the fear takes over,

cutting their cries to

terrified whimpers

 

      Listen

listen to the silence

as their squeaking voices

suddenly stop

 

     Can't you hear the silence?

the quiet that is so

shockingly loud

it hurts my ears
