Tea & Tears

Tea & Tears

A Poem by Tinasha LaRayé
"

self-grief

"

And my heart turned the color of my skin

turned against myself

self-hate knocks down the door

as love limps & whimpers yonder with tale 'tween legs

whimpers yonder with yelps and cries

whimpers yonder till distant and faint and gone

and my heart beat ice

and I filled my glass

and poured some tea

and drank my new life

with no sugar

no sweetener

just the root

and the grit

and the truth

and I learned to live with that glass

and that life

and hate sittin' right here next to me

talking over supper

like 2 old friends catching up on stories

except mine were all lies

and his were all spoofs

and the tea is what got me through

and the tea is what gets me through

the cold tea

and my crusted tears

and my memories

This imagery gave me chills. There is a darkness in this poem that comes from truths in the unexplored corners of our minds and hearts where we store all of the feelings that are too uncomfortable to admit exist. Fortunately...that is where an amazing spirit of strength is born in the end.
