A Dream and a Prayer

A Dream and a Prayer

A Poem by Titus McGuire
"

Sometimes a dream and a prayer can be worth more than all the riches in the world, but only if we can recognize their value.

"

All I have to offer you, my dear

Is a dream and a prayer

And a heart full of love only for you

And a future for the two of us

I can’t promise it will be perfect

And that there will be no hardships along the path we take

But I promise to always be by your side

And to give you all of my love

And to love you with all of my heart

I can’t build you castles or give you riches

But I can build a life for us

And give you happiness if you will let me

But I see that is not enough

I would give anything for you to love me

I would have given the world

But the world wasn’t mine to give

Nor were the moon or the stars in the sky

I have nothing to offer you

Save for a dream and a prayer

And a heart full of love for only you

But you have turned me away

For someone who can give you more

Something material, something you can see

But who will hold you when the nights grow cold

When your burdens become heavy

And there is no one there to help carry the load

When all the material items lose their value

And you see that your heart is empty

Will you think of me on cold nights

While you lay there in his arms

Wishing you had something more

Something you could feel

Not with your hands, but with your heart

Something that could warm your soul

And make you look forward to each day

Sometimes, when you’re alone

Do you wish you could give everything

Just to have a dream and a prayer

What a beautiful poem! So heartfelt and honest. I truly loved reading this. It was so sincere and easy to read, flowed well in logical and realistic progression. It's ending couldn't have been anymore perfect... you got what you wanted, and now do you want it or was it really what you needed.? Lots of feel without "screaming" at the reader. Great write!

This is just beautiful! It's written with so much depth and emotion. The thoughts are romancing with the flow of each line. It's very lovely and very enticing. It's just so heartwarming. A sense of sincerity is resonating in this piece. A beautiful and wonderful write.

Wonderful job of capturing the concept of the bigger better deal. So much in the offering if only an offering were enough, so much for love concrete and yet not enough.

I almost cried.

Give me those candy bars and tuned up cars and all those other little useless things -forget about love and what the spiritual brings- I want and lust after those materiel things. Too many choose this path-

On those cold and lonely days when the shine of gold no longer holds its luster all that is left is a cold and empty bed- Your piece expresses this to the nines-

What I also found outstanding in this piece was the tone- Normally in these pieces a bit of anger is directed at the object of one affections that denied or rejected their overtures of love -a undertone of resentment and loss- Not in this case- This piece was void of hurt and loss but one of sadness for the choice that was made by one who chose glitter and materiel needs over the sublime- great write.
