JIM

JIM

The Man sits quietly, hat in hand.

Asking for such a little thing!
Will you look him in the eye~
or quickly as you can, pass him by?

One cent, it's not so much~

even a smile, his heart to touch.
It's up to you, your choice;
will you listen to that inner voice?

Others stride hurriedly past;

never slowing down, walking fast.
They pretend not to see;
keeping a tight grip on their penny!

A smile does not crease their face;

they ignore him at an increasing pace.
Yet you hesitate, do you know him?
Thinking it's Bill, no wait, it's Jim!

You suddenly remember where he's from~

Down the hall, apartment twenty one!
What has happened, why is he here?
But for the grace of God you'd be there!

You stop and look into his gentle eyes~

he is not begging, just trying to survive!
Reaching out, you start with a grin~
"Here, take this money; Smile, Jim!"
