Anger Hides Pain

Anger Hides Pain

A Poem by Zapata

Her brother screams

She locks the door

She can’t take this

Anymore.

The tears that fall silently

Onto her hands

Fail to wash away

All the guilt that she stands.

The blows to the walls

Shake her awake with fear

She looks around the room

But no one else is here.

Her mother stops

and lowers her head

She covers her face

and looks away with dread.

He yells horrible things

that can't be taken back

They linger in the air

and throw her off track.

He bites with his words

that stab like a sword

She crouches down low

and listens underneath the door.

Anger turns to bitterness

and bitterness to fear

His father only comforts him and says

"Look, son, I am here."

The yells turn to racking sobs

that fill the empty space

And suddenly the sound drowns out

And leaves without a trace.
