Into the Book

Into the Book

A Poem by Tanisa Samaddar
"

when you find a piece of your soul while reading a book

"
In the depths of the white pages
I found the highway to my soul
I showed a thumb to an arriving car
And struck a conversation.

The man was not in his thirties,
And definitely not in his twenties either.
He was an old man
With a bearded chin,
And eyebrows thick with knowledge.

He has worked here for ages
He knows my my every corner.
I am not what I appear
Was his immediate response
When I asked him about myself.

I am not going to reveal
Your superficial destiny
Because that is something
You can change
After you keep this dusty book.
Remember, just one thing,
Life is not what it seems
And definitely not what you want it to be.
But there is firepit
Burning with passion
By woods of desire,
And that will bring me glory
To my hard earned pleasure.

The book was good,
And I kept thinking about it.
But there was another piece of my soul
Beckoning to me.

This time it was a scooter,
And the lady was gorgeous,
But the sadness in her eyes,
Doomed my expecting nature.

WOW. What an evocative piece! I have to keep reading it, because there are so many facets that I keep discovering as I read. The analogy of a hitchhiker taking a trip to an unknown destination is very well executed; I feel like its a scenario that speaks to all readers.
The last stanza is my favorite. "This time it was a scooter" definitely goes down as one of those great lines that you just can't get out of your head.
My one suggestion would be to consider putting the old man's lines in quotes. I know technically it's a conversation that's taking place in one person's head and not actually a dialogue between two people, but that might help accentuate your metaphor by adding a little more variety to the structure. But hey, I mainly work with prose, so what do I know?
Love it. PLEASE hit me up with a read request for your next piece.
