Whispers From A Beach

Whispers From A Beach

A Poem by Hakeem Adam
"

I from the city where.......

"

I’m from the city where the lights dont stay on enough
political issues are discussed through out the month
children eat”Graphic and times at Brunch”
shades of brown uniforms with pockets patched
I’m from the city where one in every four cars is commercial
hard liquor is advertised in commercials
where there is more gas in the taps than at the station
police like being on the street than in the station
I’m from the city where teenagers are employed on social media
conversations occur in one syllable not cos they’re easier
hampers go to directors rather than the needier
I’m from the city where prices are like weeds
grow up fast in terms of everything from ‘chalewote’ to TV’s
I’m from the city where there are more fake products than people
if you are having Bad luck then your grandmother is evil
but that’s what comes out the mouth of people
I’m from the city where if your name is bisexual
like Elikem, Mawunyo, don’t take that personal
the derrogatory comments that may be a daily ritual
if from the city where waakye is sold in leaves
everywhere is suitable to pee
kayayos aspiring to be queens
and most dreams are killed before they get to be
I’m from the city where there is no love for the city
sachets, polythenes, the whole place is filthy
Millennium city with cave man thinking if from the city where everyday businesses spring up
if you dont lock your door prepare for a stick up
young boys dreaming of being richer
and their relatives bones could make that quicker
I’m from the city where its soccer or Sakawa if you want out of the Ghetto some places ain’t good for walking in stilettos
you wake up early to beat the traffic
the young woman in your office attire could be a distraction
but its her only chance of ever landing a marriage
I’m from the city where I’ll probably be judged for this
speaking the truth is close to sacrilege
I’m from a city which is a city by definition
but no mean city on the average
despite the bad cell coverage
we do love the city cos there is non like it
I’m from the city of ………….
