(Remembering a Gentleman)

 

For you, Augustus,

Have grown old,

 

Though golden is your mane

 

And you have

Much to do with gold,

As love you still retain

 

Beyond the gate,

The cruel winds blow

Where death has

 

Not a care

 

Yet you would chance

The journey now,

 

As you have loved ones there

 

You are a king

Of kindly cats,

 

A kindred life

Grown frail

 

That gazes from behind a gate

And licks his shedding tail.[1]

I fell in love with Augustus, that adorable gentleman. A golden cat indeed. I hope he saw many, rich, wonderful years and I hope he is restored to his loved ones now after crossing the rainbow bridge with such courage. 🌈

Augustus belonged to my son-in-law and younger daughter, Mara. I spent several afternoons with him alone on different visits to their home in State College, Pennsylvania. He was excellent company, the kind of host who strives to make a guest comfortable - one who is present and schooled in the social graces.

That is very rare in cats. Mine usually keep to themselves and only approach me occasionally for a friendly pat. :)
