Even the Sacred Sun

Even the Sacred Sun

A Poem by Paris Hlad

eEven the Sacred Sunf

Some Lines Concerning the Bronze Age

Even the sacred sun must die "

It is the way of things,

Seen in the dust

On snouted gods

And stuffed

Egyptian kings

The frog that hopped

Along the Nile,

The lion on the plain -

They perished in

A time of drought

Or in a time of rain

Who built the great necropolis,

Who bartered for the wheat,

Who raised a phallic obelisk,

Or knelt at pharaoh’s feet

Were painted

Every stroke alike

In colors that would fade,

Into the walls of pyramids,

Despite what spells were made.

Everyone and everything must eventually die.
It's the one bitter truth of life. Even the mighty, all encompassing sun will not be spared. Nor were the supreme pharaohs and the lions that roamed the valleys and hills of yore. Interestingly, the pyramids symbolize death and its power which is quite ironic to what the pharaohs thought they would bring them - Eternal Life. A beautiful poem with interesting references and word choice and one that I enjoyed absolutely.
