The Secrets of the Sea

The Secrets of the Sea

A Poem by Stargazer
"

My first attempt at dark fantasy/horror with a heavy Lovecraft influence.

"
I embarked for a journey into the unknown
Looking for secrets more precious than gold

I traveled far and wide
From the west to the east
And to my surprise
I collected nothing but myth

"Who might ye be?"
An eyeless old fisherman asked me

"Oh don't bother,
I seek unknown tales and hidden beasts."

"But you look young and in your pride,
Why fall beneath the thin layer of sanity upon which you reside?

Oh young seeker, you seem so bold,
I know your destination
If you look for darkness and cold"

I clenched my fists and my eyes opened wide
"Go on ol' fool, pierce my valor's hide."

"Down by the ocean something creeps
Waiting to be found by men like you and me
If you seek that at which dogs bark at night and snakes hiss
Seek deep inside the shadows of the sea

It gives birth to nightmare,
Breath to despair,
Inspiration to the mad,
All from its lair

It sighs storms
And it feeds on hope
It may take any horrid form
So disgusting that there is no description or lore

Run now young fool, with joy and pride
Into the black forest in which it resides

Go be forgotten
For all must rest

Apart from it which sleeps and waits
To swallow the sun and spit out death"

The elder's voice echoed in my mind
Were his words honest or have I become blind?

As I crept into my bed I let out a desperate cry
I turned more and more mad as the days went by

Is curiosity a curse,
Or into believing such I was coerced?

My eyelids fell,
My world was dark,
I felt something that dwells
Somewhere afar

My heart beat fast,
My palms turned cold

Is it death's grasp
That which unfolds?

And as I laid sight upon that which haunted my poor soul
I clawed out my eyes in a rite filled with blood and gore
I ran away once more,
Days became months, and months years as the weather turned cold

The sound of waved reached my ears
The silence by yells and seagulls screeches was pierced

I sat once again, down by the sea
Oh dear lord, why have you abandoned me?

Until I heard footsteps from someone quite close
How could he be so energetic when the world's so morose

If there is happiness I deserved it as much as he
So I turned my battered face and asked him

"Who might ye be?"

Beautiful work. I love how the journey of the man and how everything made a perfect loop by the wisdom he gained.
