Disconnected From Messenger

Disconnected From Messenger

A Poem by Alex Hutchinson
"

What does it feel like to lose all belief in yourself?

"

It’s the sorrow of being untouched

By hand, by sound of voice

Reflected

It’s a wound within the chest

A throbbing ache

Regretted

It’s a dense fog of the soul

Succumbing to bad posture

The body language of one who knows

Only how to falter

It’s the beckoning gloom of endless night

The tireless wake of the surf

It’s a shelf stocked with memoirs that gave up the fight

Fear of a premature birth

It’s sitting alone

Cast aside

By one’s own expectations

It’s choosing to cry

Without knowing why

The pity your only salvation

As someone who's shelve is filled with memoirs, and even my own sits there, unfinished. I understood this piece. Succumbing to bad posture and dreaming of the flesh that shall only be read through the words of a cold computer screen. Endless nights that will never be fulfilled by the one thing that can truly make me feel whole.

Loving the subtle rhyming of this piece [sorry - today seems to be a rhyme-focused-review day for some reason], alongside the more direct rhymes.
Some great imagery to describe feelings and symptoms here;
"Succumbing to bad posture" stood out particularly for me, because it seemed a succinct way to describe the retreat into slouches...and also it was an accurate portrait. Some poems about negative feeling tend to be vague or cliched, but you've picked up on some very common and shared things that don't often get a mention, and definitely not the way you've written them.

Great poem. Flow and language are both great.
I come away from it feeling pity, which I think is partially the intent. Effective.

Thanks for posting this.

It's the s***s to feel like this....It hurts and is scrapes the soul harder than pavement ever could. But it's a gift to be able write about it...it helps in the healing to be able to write what you're feeling.

Everyone needs to be loved, everyone needs to be caressed. Have no fear, do not pity yourself, go for it!
Yet as a poem, it is great. I just love your images and your erudite vocabulary.
