god and all his friends

god and all his friends

A Poem by vivekanand

a mangy street dog
lost its way into the damp recesses
of an evening temple
and cosily lay down near the altar..

disturbed by this profane intrusion,
devout worshippers
began a chase all over the corridor..
the priest put down
the sacred plate of penny offerings
and brought out a twig
from his restroom...

a small child started its dialogue
with the dog
unpertrubed..

the dog was sent out
into the streets again
to resume its wild journey
collarless as it was..

the child was instructed
in cleanlliness and divine hygiene..

and then
everyone heard that laughter,
coming from inside the
empty altar
