the ironies of the obvious

the ironies of the obvious

A Poem by vivekanand

the ironies of the obvious

the silence i chose
not to interpret
hangs in broad sunlight
as a giant pendulum
announcing,
with every to and fro motion,
its inevitability
and the end of time...

. ha ha ! ... what a momentous step you've taken in thought, dear V. ... "i chose not to interpret" ... which is an interpretation in and of itself ... but the point really is ... that when there's a silence between two people ... and they don't have to be lovers ... then we always have a choice of interpreting that silence in a way that oppresses us ... because i don't know for what reason but human beings have a tendency to submit to oppression or to submission or whatever ... doesn't matter ... what matters is that a person's silence must not make the other person feel small in any way ... the important thing is that we are not silent ... and the other person is silent ... they bring the quality of the relationship down ... not us ... we may not gain an audience with them if they continue to be silent ... but at least we don't lose any ground that we may have covered ... on our own ... in our own lives ... independent of them ... and of course ... independent of their silence too ... so, for me, this poem is an ode to a fair and a rational and a reasonable and (at the same time and with equal intensity) a very human kinda assertion ... and i love it ... freedom of expression is freedom from oppression ... because the consistent expression of freedom eventually leads to freedom ... as history has proved to us time and again ...
