invisible illness

invisible illness

A Poem by Kristen

If only mental illness could be like a physical illness
where if you were in a manic episode, people came right away to help you
where if you were right on the verge of thinking that ending your life was the only way out, everyone would visit you daily, asking how you are.
where if your body was deteriorating because you refused to eat due to the cruelty you faced everyday 5 years ago, people wished you well, made sure you were looked after.
Sadly, it isn't.

instead, if you are bipolar, people get scared or laugh because they think you are "crazy"
instead, if you are suicidal, people tell you to "just get over it" or "it's not that bad"
instead, if you have an eating disorder, people tell you to "think of the kids in Africa" or "just eat!"

this is a world where the cries for help from the mentally ill are ignored, laughed off, considered cries for attention and compliments.

open your eyes
open your mind
we are people too.
