To myself

To myself

A Poem by Jemima Laing

I stop and stare
You turn and glare
Standing right here
With so much to say
Feeling that need
But three worlds away

My instincts say no
While my heart says go
The battle goes on
Tearing me apart
I'm reminiscent of a pawn
And it's breaking my heart

I stop and think
On the edge of the brink
What is happening to me
Why can't I go back
To the way I used to be
I plunge into the black

It's nice down here
I have no fear
I know no pain
It is my lone sanctuary
I can forget again
I long so to tarry

But it's not to be

That, at least, I can see
Life mystifies
No matter what we desire
So open your eyes
And embrace the fire
