for the unfulfilled twenty-somethingA Poem by Natalie Cooper
They told us we were finite
Vain and selfish and difficult to love But that can't be true I've found infinity in your tired eyes Stay home and write love songs to ourselves Learn to hurt in new ways Quiet ways Love furiously and wildly Hate evenly and silently Over-medicated-under-rested-over-worked-under-fed Pull up the skirt that's slipped low on your skinny hips Rip off the half broken false nails and Wipe the blood from your broken glass heels as you pour out another glass Drink it. Then another another another another Draw on your war paint thick and brave To stumble into the night Bury your head in the sand Spill your words with a clumsy tongue Give away that love for free that you worked so hard for So hard Tell yourself you're young and free As you dance and touch and sweat As your alarm buzzes at six AM As your head is spinning fast and heavy As you're skipping breakfast to catch the bus (so you tell yourself anyway) Cover up that bruise and brush away the vomit on your breath Run from that body you sleep next to at night Run from your parents, warm love and suffocating heat Run from a world that demands you grow up, ten years too early Oh, child. Pick up your pieces and pull yourself together Shine on and shine bright young love It's alright It's all alright It's all alright It'll all be alright soon
