Holidays

Holidays

A Story by Anne Lyons

I was never one who thought

much of holidays.

It's almost as if holidays were

designed for family convergence;

masking the holiday itself and in

fact celebrating the "coming together"

in other words.

And when that big day approaches

most people are frantically searching

for what will make them appear like

they are meeting the standards of

the family.

At least that seems to be the normal

routine with my family during these

intended joyful days.

My family has always had this attitude of

"have to act and look the part" engraved.

When in all actuality we are like torn

up pages trying to be pieced together

by glue (not the kind of glue you would

get at an office depot either).

There are constant disputes that center

around selfish behaviors; always trying to

drag me in to side with one or the other.

I suppose I define the holidays as a way

to bring loved ones together, even when

internally most want to stay home and

not face the standards that come with

holidays.
