Substitute

Substitute

My teacher is going on a trip
A few days of school she is going to skip
But for her joy we did not hoot
For we are getting a substitute

Then…

We said, “NO WAY!!!” and groaned and whined
We tried to make her change her mind
But arguing with her was moot
And we’re getting a substitute

So…

We started to talk (as most kids do)
Of who would be coming in a day or two
Would they be mean or smart or cute?
Who would be our substitute?

Maybe…

She’ll ride a broom with long black hair
She’ll do magic while we stare
Wing of bat and eye of newt
A witch will be our substitute

Or…

He’ll make us walk in nice straight lines
And do lots of push-ups double-time
A shouting voice and shiny boots
A marine will be our substitute

Perhaps…

She’ll wear lots of makeup with manicured nails
Big sunglasses and an assistant named Dale
A fancy car with lots of loot
A rich and famous substitute

Finally…

The day has come the door is open
The person for which we’ve been hoping
But normal glasses and a dark blue suit?
It’s just a plain old substitute

How cute--this poem about a substitute. My school days were so long ago that I don't think the word "substitute" had been coined yet, not even in regards to artificial sweetner. (I think it was called 'sacharin' back then, and it caused cancer)
No doubt this poem rings an alarm with today's kids, though. Nice job, Arielle. Sam
