There was darkness (even) in Heaven;
How was there not,
When, even there, a Shadow wrought
An army before the Light?

There was light (even) in Hell;
How was there not,
When, among those bid and those bought,
I steered away and out of sight?

There was tranquility (even) on Earth;
How was there not,
When, even here, I found the thought
To describe the ironies of each plight?
