a reminder

a reminder

A Poem by Mel Carrington
"

a reminder for myself

"
i see slim legs and nice hair and all i can think is
it's her
it's her
it's her
i want to take the insecure side of me and say
stop.
it's okay.
he loves you

don't think about the possibility of her because you haven't met her
don't conjure phantoms out of the air because it'll do you no good
he loves you
remember that

you are not light skin, nor light hair
he does not cling to remnants of her and neither should you
you are neither tall nor skinny, in an honors program, nor are you anything like her
he loves you
remember that

just because you lost your headphones and you can't drown out the world by overloading your ears to occupy your eyes
doesn't mean you should start looking for her looking for him
stop
stop
stop
it doesn't work that way

he loves you
remember that

even though you live on the same floor he will walk you down the hallway to your door and kiss you goodnight
he will think you're beautiful even when you look your worst, even when you're in sweatpants, glasses, and have wet hair because you just came out of the shower
even when you're upset and crying
he will hold you until the tears dry up
he will treat you gently
he will make you laugh because he wants to and he loves you
remember that.
