She Understood

She Understood

A Poem by R.L. Underwood

loud mind,

the thoughts came in like rain,

slow at first,

then all of the sudden,

flooding the corners,

drawing out the monsters,

Quiet voice,

told to be silent,

and never speak about those things,

don't speak of the drinking,

don't speak of the abuse,

Shut the door.

Shy girl,

Likes to draw,

loves to dance,

because those don't involve words,

speak through the movements, and the brush

That was her voice.

Open eyes,

She sees the people,

notices them all,

plain in her sight,

as they really are,

and now she understands.
