The First Touch

The First Touch

A Poem by Ranbir Singh

I never knew I could cry,
But now when I look at you for the first time,
And hold you in my arms,
I behold the nature’s wonder,
My dear sweet son, my beautiful baby,
I must say,
You have changed my life forever.

Oh! Is that a smile?
Are you bonding with your father?
I am so happy today,
I have no words to describe what I feel.

No! No! My sweet little thing,
Please do not cry,
Let me hold you close to my heart,
Here, is that more comfortable?
Can you feel my heart?
Can you feel me alive?
My son, my God’s gift,
It is all for you, just for you, only for you.

I know I can never be what your mother is,
She has created you out of her,
You are a part of her body, soul and mind,
Mother and son are one.

No, I can never be that,
But I shall make a promise today,
In the presence of the gods,
Let the heavens and the earths hear,
Let the alpha and omega know,
Let the whole world know,
That I will surely make it up to you.
Every ounce of my flesh,
Every drop of my blood,
Every part of my soul,
I will sell it whole,
I will trade it whole,
Just to see a smile on your face.
Today I witness the Almighty’s wonder,
A moment of self realization for me,
Today I see His great game,
The difference a child can make,
Such a small thing,
And such a great impact.
