I watched him leave from my window
Coated with frost, warmer them my heart
Shattered, broken, desolate I watched
As he stole into the night
Like a toy, ugly and forgotten I longed
But did nothing
My words were stuck, for I knew his fate – how slow was I to admit it
To myself it was a whisper
That grew into a hope
But hope is a mystifying thing
Tentative to appear
Dangerous to lose
Hesitant to leave, or choose a side
Many moons passed, each dimmer then the last
For prepared was I to die
In fact, I willed it
Convinced was I that nothing
Nothing
Would beat such a tribulation as this
And I closed my eyes
Stole a breath
A last, undeserved sight at the sky – the one he watched, ever now
So free….
And waited
It was soon impossible to name where I was
Could I have died, and moved on, so soon
So quietly?
When I awoke from my slumber, it was to a different world
At long last seen
By different eyes
And though this new world, in this new time could be so fresh
So forgiving
The letter was the same
For friends, there wasn’t one
Time may have stopped, my candle frayed and burned long before its time
But the result of my sufferings
Were still bittersweet
He lives
Oh, my one, my lover….
Lives
