Equality - Have We Acheived it Yet?

Equality - Have We Acheived it Yet?

A Story by yanisawesome1

In the past century, women across the world gradually all came to receiving almost equal treatment as men. The reason why I say almost is because I have come to realise that in many ways, women and men are still not equal.

I remember a time in primary school when the teacher read us The Piggy Book by Anthony Browne. But when the teacher turned to the last page, depicting the mother mending a car, everyone was confused. However, now when I think back, Browne was telling us more than just the family became a happy one in the end. It was telling us more that women can do the same jobs as men and should not be underestimated. But it was the reaction of the kids in my class that made me realise that the idea of men and women not being the same had already been carved into people're minds from an early age

After talking to some people to go to boys’ schools, I have learnt that they do subjects such as metal work. This would be a useful skill to have if they were to become someone who works closely with machines. However, I go to an all girls’ school, and I do food tech and textiles. The fact that girls like us,  who live in such a modern day and age, are still taught such domestic skill, bothers me. And the fact that no one seems to mind it, bothers me. Because no one seems to mind it, it brings me to think that society, even today, still believes a girl’s place is at home.

According to the traditional Chinese Law, if a man commits adultery, he would be punished with castration. However, if a woman does the same thing, she would be confined. After doing much research, I have come to the conclusion that confinement would be a far worse punishment than castration. Even though castration will cause one to be unable to reproduce and their growth will cease, new studies in Korea have shown that it may actually length one’s life. However, confinement will lead to serious mental and physical health issues.

The thing that bothers me is when will women be regarded as equal to men?
