A Memory

A Memory

A Poem by Karissa Young
"

Don't memorize me, please...remember me.

"
I don't want to memorize your face
I want to see something new every time I look at you
I want to see an imperfection
and fall even more in love

I hate the thought of memorization
it takes all the meaning out of discovery

learn
memorize
move on

I don't want us to be one more thing we memorize because we think we should
one more flash card in our school binder
I want to be those people
who still get surprised when we learn something new about each other

But if we do remember something
I want that memory to return to you because it meant something
I want what we remember to be the things that stood out

important things
silly things
heart-wrenching things

don't memorize me
remember me
because I'll never be able to forget you

Author's Note

Karissa Young
If you happen to find someone to love, don't spend days and night memorizing each other. promise me you'll let yourself remember things because they're important to you, not because it's expected of you to remember.
