The Alcheit Poem

The Alcheit Poem

A Poem by Yahkeved
"

The holiest day on the Biblical calendar was last week. Yom Kippur is the day of atonement. The "Alcheit" is a prayer said many times during this day. As the prayer is we beat our chest in repentance.

"
beat my chest to testify,
I have sinned before Your eyes,
I beat my chest to Show I was wrong,
In straying so far and for so long,
I beat my chest as I repent,
Of all my sin I regret,
I beat my chest as an act of remorse,
For having disobeyed You, Lord,
I beat my chest to clear my guilt,
In running away from Your will,
I beat my chest and now I pray,
And in humility cast my pride away,
I beat my chest for all iniquities,
All transgressions and impurities,
I beat my chest as I cry to You,
"Forgive me, Lord, and make me new",
I beat me chest with a sorrow-filled heart,
Begging You for a brand-new start,
I beat my chest and bend my knee,
I repent, oh Lord, let me start clean.
