We're Only Scared of Ourselves

"

Why is it we run from the dark?
I know there's nothing there.
Our parents already proved it to us,
Time and time again.
Is it because those childish fears rush to meet us
When we knock on their door?
We tell ourselves it isn't worth it.
We say there isn't anything there.
We know there isn't anything there.
But our conscience is there.
Our deepest insecurities are there.
So tell yourself,
"There's nothing!"
And close your eyes tight
As you run up the stairs.
And feel your heart race,
And your mind shudder,
And hug yourself for comfort.
Next time won't be different.
It'll be the exact same.
Don't you realize?
You're only wasting your time.
With petty hopes,
And those faulty promises.
You break them yourself.

About
I started writing free-form poetry in high school. Most of my poems have darker themes - those are the personal ones. If they have a lighter theme, chances are it was a contest prompt of some sort. .. more..
